Sample questions with answers

These are the questions in the free test above, with answers. Try the test first. You'll learn more by getting some wrong.

1. In a unit trust, who holds the fund's assets on behalf of unitholders?
Answer: The trustee. The trustee holds the assets and oversees the manager to protect unitholders. The manager makes the investment decisions.
2. A key benefit of a collective investment scheme for a small investor is:
Answer: Access to a professionally managed, diversified portfolio with a small amount of money. Pooling money gives investors diversification and professional management they couldn't easily get alone.
3. A money market fund mainly invests in:
Answer: Short-term, high-quality debt instruments and deposits. Money market funds hold short-term instruments, aiming to preserve capital and provide liquidity, with low but non-guaranteed returns.
4. A balanced fund typically:
Answer: Holds a mix of equities and bonds. Balanced funds combine growth assets (equities) and income assets (bonds) to moderate risk.
5. A fund's net asset value per unit is S$2.00 and the initial sales charge is 5% of the NAV. What is the offer price?
Answer: S$2.10. Offer price = NAV × (1 + 5%) = 2.00 × 1.05 = S$2.10.
6. The annual management fee of a unit trust is usually:
Answer: Deducted from the fund's assets and reflected in the NAV. Management fees are taken from the fund, so they reduce the NAV rather than appearing as a separate bill.
7. Under forward pricing, an investor who places an order at 10 a.m. buys units at:
Answer: The price calculated at the next valuation point after the order. Forward pricing deals at the next price calculated after the order is received, so no one can trade at a known stale price.
8. Standard deviation of a fund's returns is a measure of:
Answer: Volatility (total risk). A higher standard deviation means returns swing more widely around the average.
9. Rising interest rates generally cause existing bond prices to:
Answer: Fall. Bond prices move inversely to yields. When rates rise, existing bonds with lower coupons become less valuable.
10. A fund returned 8% in a year when its benchmark returned 6%. The fund:
Answer: Outperformed its benchmark by 2 percentage points. Relative performance compares the fund with its benchmark: 8% − 6% = 2 percentage points of outperformance.
11. Before investing in a unit trust offered to the public in Singapore, investors should receive:
Answer: The prospectus and the Product Highlights Sheet. Authorised or recognised schemes offered to retail investors need a prospectus registered with MAS and a Product Highlights Sheet.
12. The CPF Investment Scheme (CPFIS) lets members:
Answer: Invest part of their CPF savings in approved products such as included unit trusts. CPFIS allows investment of Ordinary and Special Account savings (above set minimums) in included products, subject to rules and limits.
13. An open-ended fund differs from a closed-ended fund because it:
Answer: Creates and cancels units as investors buy and sell. Open-ended funds issue new units and redeem them at NAV-based prices; closed-ended funds have a fixed share count traded on an exchange.
14. Diversifying a fund across many stocks mainly reduces:
Answer: Unsystematic (specific) risk. Diversification lowers company-specific risk. Market-wide risk remains.
15. Which document gives the most complete legal description of a unit trust's objectives, risks and fees?
Answer: The prospectus. The prospectus is the full offer document; the Product Highlights Sheet summarises it.
